Mind map of the Legal Design landscape
While collaborating with studio 6ZERO5 in Italy, I immersed myself in the emerging field of Legal Design* by mapping the landscape, analyzing existing projects, and interviewing experts to identify opportunities. From these insights, I created a personal project tackling a bureaucratic challenge I experienced firsthand: navigating the Italian residence permit process.

Context
While working with studio 6ZERO5 in Italy on a client proposal, I explored the emerging field of Legal Design. I mapped existing projects, interviewed legal designers, and developed future scenarios to understand this new professional role and identify opportunities. From these insights, I created a personal project tackling a bureaucratic challenge I experienced firsthand: navigating the Italian residence permit process.
Opportunity
Legal Design was a relatively new field, and little information had been gathered about it. This created an opportunity to understand the current trends and existing projects in the field. It led to the question: How might we use design to make the law more accessible to everyone?
My role
I conducted comprehensive research on Legal Design, creating visualizations to map and cluster projects across the emerging field. Through interviews with Legal Designers, I identified opportunities and developed future scenarios for the profession. I then applied these insights to a personal project: redesigning the Italian residence permit process. This included stakeholder interviews, process mapping, and prototype testing to transform a complex bureaucratic experience into a more navigable system.
Outcome
Unfortunately, the client did not want to explore further, but I took the opportunity to use this research as part of my master's degree. The final thesis included accessible research on Legal Design, featuring examples and mind maps, along with a personal project addressing the residence permit process in Italy.
Definition of three areas of interest based on the insights from the research phase.
Mind map of what is a Legal Designer based on the insights gather from interviewing experts.
Based on the insights of the research phase and the experts interviews, I created 6 future scenarios.
Cultural Probes created to gather feedback from the current resident permit process.
Redesign of the Resident Permit Process following the guidelines of Design Italia.
Result
I graduated with top marks from the MSc in Product Service System Design. Additionally, I presented my results at the Law Via the Internet 2018 Conference.
My thesis has since been cited, and I have become a recognized reference in the Legal Design community.
